KEY MESSAGES: - There will be repeated chances for showers and thunderstorms over the next several days. - Gusty WNW winds up to 40 mph are possible Friday. - Cooler temperatures are expected over the weekend. WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW: Low pressure over western Canada will drift into the Canadian prairies over the next few days. The low will then linger through the first half of next week with various shortwaves pushing across Montana. The first of these shortwaves will push a cold front through the state late on Friday with thunderstorms, gusty winds and a drop in temperatures expected. The next wave will be on Sunday with similar conditions although winds will not be as strong. CONFIDENCE AND POTENTIAL DEVIATIONS FROM BASE FORECAST: High confidence exists on the general temperature trend through Saturday. Also, there is a high confidence of gusty west winds Friday and Saturday although winds are not expected to be as strong. The southwestern portion of the forecast area has a 60-90+ percent probability of a 30 mph wind gust on Friday at this time while the remainder of the area has weaker winds. Winds will be stronger across the east on Saturday. This should lead to a Lake Wind Advisory being needed for Friday afternoon. There is low confidence on the timing of showers and thunderstorms, as well as the total amount of rain for any particular location.
