...NWS Damage Survey for 05/26/2024 Straight-Line Wind Event...

Survey Summary:

The National Weather Service conducted a storm survey in two 
areas that had intense damage south of Glasgow. In general, central
and southern Barren County had lots of tree damage. While driving
around on area roadways, snapped and uprooted trees were a common
sight. 

The first location of enhanced damage was southwest of Glasgow 
and northwest of Scottsville Road (US 31 East). Southeast of the
intersection of Old Davidson Road and Captain's Lane there was a
snapped tree and an uprooted tree, but three quarters of a mile to
a mile farther to the southeast, damage became much more 
widespread in an area approximately 200 yards wide within a 750 
yard wide area of visible damage. Many trees fell to the east-
southeast after being uprooted or snapped along the fence rows 
and creek surrounding the areas open pastures. Winds in this area 
likely reached 85 to 90 mph. The northern extent of heavy damage 
ended just southwest of the dead end of Gorby Road. In this area, 
around an acre patch of woods was blown down to the east- 
southeast. Across a neighborhood to the south, behind a house on 
Moss Way, another patch of woods showed the most impressive 
damage of snapped, uprooted, and splintered trees. It's estimated
that winds reached 95 to 100 mph in this area.

The second area of enhanced damage was at a business just west of
Glover Road, southeast of Glasgow. The property had multiple 
large pole barn buildings. Two of these buildings had a section of
their roofs blown off to the east. The northern building, which 
was oriented north to south, lost about half of its metal roof. 
Some of the roof just peeled back, but two sections blew downwind 
to the east and east-southeast. One of these sections came to rest
on the ground while the other section blew onto another building 
to the east-southeast before falling to the ground on the other 
side of the building. This caused punctures to the roof of the 
downwind building. Multiple pieces of lumber were still sticking 
out of the downwind building's roof. The other building on the 
property to lose a section of roof sat on the south side of the 
property and was oriented west to east. The upper part of the 
south side of the western exterior wall appeared to have been 
blown in which allowed wind to get in and blow the southwest 
section of metal roof downwind to the east. No tree damage was 
observed across a field to the west, upwind of the damaged 
buildings.
