Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
327 AM CDT Sat Apr 20 2024

Today:

Quiet weather continues across Iowa this morning as high pressure
remains over the region. A few weak waves within the larger scale
pattern are noticeable on radar with light precipitation across
Kansas/Nebraska and in Minnesota. With this, some cloud cover has
pushed into portions of northern and western Iowa, while the rest of
the state sees clear skies. Temperatures continue to decrease with
values in the upper 20s through the 30s, with a Freeze Warning
currently in effect. Winds out of the northwest remain relatively
light across the state around 5-10 mph.

Temperatures are expected to fall a bit more yet over the next few
hours into the upper 20s to low 30s statewide, before increasing
into the upper 40s to low 50s by this afternoon. Expecting dry
conditions to persist, with mostly cloudy skies and slightly breezy
northwest winds.

Tonight and beyond:

Decreasing clouds and weakening winds will allow for a rather calm
evening and overnight, though temperatures falling around to just
below freezing will likely lead to additional freeze headlines.
Therefore, tender plants would need to be covered or brought indoors.

Sunday will come with warmer conditions as highs are expected to reach
into the upper 50s to low 60s, with sunny skies and generally light
winds. Into the start of the work week, a system passing through the
region will lead to increasing chances for showers and possibly storms
Monday afternoon/evening and continue into Tuesday. This is expected
to come with gusty winds out of the southwest with gusts upwards of
30-35 mph. Dry weather looks to return briefly Wednesday before the
next chance of precipitation arrives late Wednesday through
Thursday/Friday. Highs are expected to increase, with values generally
in the 60s to low 70s and lows in the 30s to 40s.
