Today:

A large patch of stratus cloud cover has passed gradually across the 
area early this morning, reaching eastern Iowa by 4 AM. This has kept 
those areas warmer overnight, still in the low 30s. Elsewhere 
temperatures by 4 AM had cooled into the upper teens and low 20s. Wind
overnight has been light and variable in direction.

This afternoon warm air surges north into Iowa, making it to near the
highway 30 corridor. Areas along and south of here will warm into the
upper 50s and near 60 degrees while northern Iowa will only see highs
in the upper 30s to low 50s. 

Tonight and beyond:

Other than a few sprinkles possible in southern Iowa this evening,
expect quiet and cool conditions across the area. Friday will be the
warmest day of the week as warm air extends further north with upper 
60s to low 70s possible in southern Iowa while temperatures in the 50s
extend throughout the state. Showers and thunderstorms are expected 
Friday afternoon and evening, mainly east of the I 35 corridor. This 
weekend temperatures will remain in the 40s and 50s. After a dry and 
sunny Saturday, expect increasing clouds with showers and 
thunderstorms on Sunday, continuing into Monday.

Across Iowa...temperatures are near 49 degrees west, near 53 degrees central, and near 48 degrees east. Current sky conditions are sunny west, mostly sunny central, and mostly sunny east. In the west, relative humidity is near 56%, and the dew point is near 34 degrees. In the central part of the state, relative humidity is near 39%, and the dew point is near 29 degrees. In the east, relative humidity is near 44%, and the dew point is near 27 degrees. Winds are from the east at 13 mph with gusts at 24 mph west, where conditions are not favorable for spraying due to strong winds. Winds are from the northeast at 7 mph central, where conditions are favorable for spraying. Winds are calm east, where conditions are favorable for spraying. Based on current available observations, the highest temperature is 64 degrees at Clarinda. The lowest temperature is 38 degrees at Estherville.

HISTORIC WEATHER EVENTS

Thane Creek AK reported a snow cover of 190 inches. (The Weather Channel)

The worst tornado disaster of record occurred in Chicago IL as a tornado
killed 28 persons and caused three million dollars damage. (David Ludlum)
...1997...
Ten tornadoes tore across the area, affecting the Kentucky counties of 
Adair, Metcalfe, Casey, Green, Larue, Marion, Hardin, Hart, Nelson, and 
Russell; and the Indiana counties of Scott and Jefferson. Two of the 
twisters produced F3 damage. A 28-year-old woman was killed in Metcalfe 
County as she was thrown from her destroyed mobile home. A 40-year-old man 
was killed when his house in Bonnieville (Hart County) was hit by one of 
the F3 tornadoes and blown off its foundation. This tornado injured many 
people when it caused several car accidents as it crossed Interstate 65.
